All Ages.

From Beginners to Virtuosos.

We don’t like to beat our own drum - Oh, who are we kidding?! Of course we do!

We are so proud of this little old Band and its long history of tooting around the streets of Maldon.

We are an inclusive community organisation that welcomes members of any age, background and musical ability.

Whether you’re aged 8 or 80+, we invite you to come along and try at one of our weekly rehearsals and experience the charm of Maldon Brass Band.

Junior Band Members

Our Junior Band meets weekly for half-hour rehearsals where they learn an exciting modern repertoire of tunes to showcase their talent. Some music scores have been arranged especially for the Juniors and tailored to suit all their different levels of music abilities. The kids learn how to read sheet music as well as understanding music theory as they discover each new piece. We also teach the Juniors the skills of marching which is always so much fun. The Juniors join the Senior Band in most performances throughout the year.

Senior Band Members

Our Senior Band tends to start from highschool aged children and up. The Senior Band meets weekly for 2-hour rehearsals. We have a large repertoire that continues to grow with fabulous new arrangements which keeps things exciting. We cover traditional marches and hymns, to gripping film scores and golden oldies that get the feet tapping away. We also learn the accompaniments to our Junior Band arrangements, and join in to mentor the youngsters as they become mini music maestros. There are many community events that feature Maldon Brass Band thoughout the year from parades to concerts.

You don’t have to play an instrument to be a member of Maldon Brass Band. Our Friends of Maldon Brass Band membership is an annual donation which helps to fund the ongoing running costs of the Band including purchasing and servicing of our many instruments, upgrading our uniforms, purchasing and arrangement of music scores and the ongoing in-school tutoring for our Junior Band. The support of the community has always been crucial to the long-running success of the Band.

  • "As a member of the Band for near on 40 years now, I'd just like to say it's an honour to be a part of it. From performing with some of the finest of brass musicians both past and present, to teaching a core group of students over the years, and now passing on knowledge and assisting a new team of students. The Band has always had a strong family influence from the early days with the Women's Auxillary raising funds through cake stalls, to personally having three generations of family as current members. The future of Maldon Brass Band is in good hands."

  • Currently we are collaborating with Maldon Primary school where our Junior Band members receive weekly 15-minute lessons. We do not currently offer this program outside of Maldon Primary School but we are hoping that we can extend the program into some of our other local primary schools in the future.

If your child attends another primary school, don’t worry, most of the learning is an as-you-go basis in a group setting during rehearsals. We have Senior Band members who accompany all Junior lessons to help them figure out the basics of their instrument and also assisting them to read along with the music. With weekly practice at home in between, we find that the students pick it up in no time!

  • Like the Juniors, most of the learning is an as-you-go basis during rehearsals. Some beginner Seniors like to come along and accompany the Juniors to build up their own foundational skills and learn to read music. Many of our members had no prior brass experience before joining, however the culture of our band encourages peer montoring, and we’re lucky to have some highly-trained musicians as members who are always willing to share their know-how with others.

If you still feel that you would benefit from individual tutoring, we can point you in the direction of some very great private tutors, however that would be at the cost of the individual.

  • Of course you can! We encourage members from all over the region. We have members playing with Maldon who are members of other communitites and some who are members of other brass bands.
